June 2023 Scratching Post

Summer is here!  Pretty soon the A/C will be on (if not already for most). Activities seem to slow down usually due to the heat and the snowbirds have returned home. But one thing NEVER changes..our 9 Pin No-Tap Bowling Tournament in August! Please read further down for more information for this fun filled afternoon with family and friends.

Check out our website as it has been a work in progress. Thanks to Melissa Penny and Gina Dacquisto for all the work they have and continue to put into this.

We are happy to be able to share our new logo designed by our friend Kristi Wayland of Electronic Ink AZ. This new logo shows more of what Sun Cities 4 Paws Cat Rescue is about. The Board of Directors met with Kristi and explained what they were looking for and through a process of selecting and modifying, they came to this logo and Kristi finalized it for us. Thank you again!

It was National Volunteer Week April 16th-22nd, and Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue celebrated with their volunteers. See pictures below.

We are very excited about our Ambassador Cat Program. Meet Sierra Leon and her story below.

Enjoy the summer. Please leave water out for our homeless pets and wildlife. Drink plenty of water and take day trips and see what Arizona is all about!

Volunteer week

Volunteer Appreciation Week went well. Vicki Colliander and Laura Parker put together a taco lunch for the volunteers on April 20th and approximately 40 volunteers participated.

Many nice comments and thank yous’ from the attendees for the great lunch and ‘gift bags’. Board member Lynn Mattei designed and created the bags. Contents included a 4 Paws magnet, can koozie, post it note pad and misc treats

Message from the Board of Directors

The Board would like to announce that Deb Heise has a new position at Sun Cities 4 Paws Cat Rescue as Director of Marketing and Development. We look forward to great things happening with Deb in her new role.

SIERRA LEON

Meet our Ambassador Cat Sierra Leon. Her story is unusual and yet captivating as to what she does. Sierra came to our shelter under our Legacy program, with her 3 other sisters. She is now 9 years old and a calico. When first meeting Sierra, she was a DIVA (and still is) and loved attention and would come up to strangers and get on their laps and love on them. She has a distinctive personality and our Volunteer Coordinator, Vicki Colliander, started wondering how she would react going out to Memory Care Units and Assisted Living. It took several months to get Sierra harness and leash trained. Volunteers would walk her up and down the aisles to prepare her for going out. The rest is history. Sierra Leon is one of few cats that visit people in facilities and will jump on their laps. Both she and the person enjoy the connection and the shared love. Sierra Leon made three visits to retirement homes in April.  The success of this program may be a chance for us to consider an opportunity to visit different retirement homes.  She is booked out 1-2 months and our volunteer team is recognizing and working with other cats that could join Sierra and be in the  “Ambassador Cat’ program.

50/50 Raffle

WE HAD A WINNER!!  Diane Suprock won $757.00 (the pot was $1514.00). Diane has been a volunteer at Sun Cities 4 Paws for years and now has her own TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release group) called ‘Sassy Cats’. This keeps Diane busy, but she always has time to help our shelter. Diane donated her winnings to the Senior Foster/Special Needs Program. THANK YOU and CONGRATS, Diane!

We have had some successful adoptions recently :)

Here are Cindy’s and Sabrina’s stories.

CINDY

Cindy came to Sun Cities 4 Paws in April of 2014 as an older kitten. When she came to us, she had already had a litter of kittens and was already spayed. She was very shy and absolutely did not like being handled. Although we worked with Cindy daily, she never really warmed up to being handled and would run & hide as soon as she was let go. Some of the volunteers made progress with her over the years. She would always be a shy girl, and we knew she would find her ‘person’ one day. Well, that day came on 5/13 when Cindy was adopted after 3318 days (9 years & 9 months)!!!!

SABRINA

Sabrina is a 14 year old long haired Siamese who was previously adopted from Sun Cities 4 Paws. She got along with her new family until they moved and the other cats in the house started attacking her as she was very shy and wouldn’t fight back. Unfortunately she had to be returned to the shelter after 12 years for her own protection. Sabrina had a dental and once she was out of pain, she was placed in the senior free roaming room to be able to look out the windows and waited for her perfect person to come, which happened on 5/13.

Featured Cats

Romero.jpg

Romero is 3 years old. Romero is a goofy kitty that loves to play. He can get easily overstimulated and anxious, so he needs an experienced cat owner that will be able to understand body language. He loves to climb up and be on tall cat trees. We do not recommend a home with other cats, children, or dogs. A quiet, calm home is best for this boy! He was adopted from 4 Paws as a kitten and surrendered due to the owner becoming homeless.

Tomahawk is a handsome 2 year old boy. He is shy and takes time for him to warm up. He was adopted once and returned as he didn’t adapt to the adopters. He loves to play and is loving once you have his trust. He would be better as an only cat and no dogs. His nickname is ‘Tom-Tom’ and would love to have a home.

Brownie.JPG

Brownie Girl is a beautiful white cat with yellow-brown eyes (hence the name!) She was found as a stray in a scrapyard with other cats, presumably as part of a feral colony. She is a little skittish around people, but she is used to and loves other cats. She will take some time to warm up to new people. She's more confident around other cats rather than being by herself, so we hope to adopt her to someone who has other cats in the home. She doesn't have experience with dogs or children, but as a skittish cat it's best that she goes to a quiet home. She is 1 1/2 years old
